Increase in drive times slows average response to fires

Releasing its latest figures, the Home Office said total response times had increased gradually over the past 20 years.

Fire services’ average response time to the most serious category of fires is more than half a minute longer than five years ago, new figures have revealed.

According to Home Office data, the average total response time to primary fires in England in 2018/19 was eight minutes and 49 seconds.

This represents an increase of 11 seconds since 2017/18 and of 33 seconds since 2013/14.

The figures come a day after chief inspector of fire services Sir Thomas Winsor called for significant reforms in a bid to improve the work of resources across the country.
